Gerald Francis McBrearty

Gerald Francis McBrearty, age 64, was born April 29, 1962, in San Antonio, TX. He passed away July 15, 2026, in Austin, after a long battle with cancer. Gerald was an incredible man; a role model and positive force for all. He was very quick-witted and had a great sense of humor. Gerald was a kind, caring husband to his wife, Wendy, a dedicated father to his two boys, Riley and Trevor, supportive youngest brother to his five siblings, and a beloved friend. He was a funny, compassionate, tenderhearted person who loved spending time with his wife and children, as well as extended family. He cherished traveling with his family and friends, especially family beach trips to Port Aransas, Disney World, ski trips, and scuba diving. He served as a Boy Scout leader for several years and was a proud father of two Eagle Scouts. Gerald loved snow skiing, scuba diving, and music – especially The Beatles. He also loved a good morning jog and his best furry friend, Bandit. He was a top-notch cook, a fine fisherman, and a capable golfer. He also had an incredible aptitude for repairing and building just about anything. He attended the University of Texas at San Antonio, earning a bachelor’s degree in computer science. After graduation, he worked at San Antonio City Public Service before moving to Austin and began working at IBM in 1989 where he worked for more than 35 years. In his role as a software engineer, Gerald performed a variety of high-level programming and technical consulting tasks, representing IBM on trips to Japan, Ireland, North Carolina, and Germany (among many more). Gerald was a brilliant man, an inventor, and a researcher, with 307 publications and over 50 software patents approved throughout his career. In the early 1990s, Gerald met his future wife Wendy Woods in Austin. Wendy was a perfect match for Gerald; they fell in love and were married in October 1994. They raised two bright and charismatic boys, Riley and Trevor, both now college graduates and gainfully employed in their respective fields. Gerald will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife, Wendy; sons Riley and Trevor, Riley’s fiancée Abbey Konecki and Trevor’s partner Kailey Foster; brothers Steven, Robert, and Kevin, sister-in-law Mary Ellen; nephews Matthew and his wife Tara, Ian, and Zane, and his wife Silvia; great nephews Indy, Wesley, and Hollis; and great niece Mae. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Virginia McBrearty; sisters Pamela and Mary Ella; and niece Shauna Autry. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Anderson Terrace Wedding and Event Venue, 11505 Anderson Mill Rd, Austin, TX 78750 on Saturday, August 29th, 2026, at 10 am – 12 pm. The requested attire is a funny T-shirt and shorts (Gerald hated dressing up).
